Why GCSE Maths results matter
For most UK parents, GCSE Maths is the single subject that causes the most worry โ and for good reason. A grade 4 or above is treated as a baseline requirement by sixth forms, colleges, apprenticeship providers and employers. Students who narrowly miss a grade 4 are typically required to resit Maths alongside their Level 3 studies, which adds pressure at exactly the moment they should be settling into A Levels or a new course. A strong grade also keeps far more doors open: many competitive sixth form courses (particularly sciences, economics and further maths-adjacent subjects) set minimum GCSE Maths grade requirements of 6 or 7.
Beyond the practical grade boundaries, GCSE Maths tends to be where a student’s relationship with the subject is decided for years to come. A student who leaves Year 11 confident in their mathematical ability carries that confidence into A Level Maths, Physics, Economics, Computer Science or Psychology โ all of which lean heavily on quantitative reasoning. Conversely, a student who finishes GCSE Maths feeling like they “just aren’t a maths person” often avoids any subject with a numerical component, closing off career paths long before they’ve had a chance to properly explore them.

Foundation vs Higher tier explained
GCSE Maths is a tiered qualification. Every exam board โ AQA, Edexcel and OCR โ offers the same two tiers, and the choice of tier is one of the most consequential decisions in a student’s GCSE journey.
Foundation tier covers grades 1 to 5. Papers are generally more accessible, with a slower build in difficulty and less emphasis on multi-step problem-solving. Foundation is the right choice for students who are likely to be working around grades 3 to 5, as it allows them to demonstrate what they know clearly, without being faced with content several grades above their working level (which can be demoralising and counter-productive in an exam setting).
Higher tier covers grades 4 to 9 (with a “safety net” grade 3 available in some circumstances, though this shouldn’t be relied upon). Higher tier includes all of Foundation’s content plus significantly more advanced topics โ trigonometric identities, further algebraic proof, vectors, more complex circle theorems, and iteration, among others. It is the correct choice for students who are comfortably working at grade 5 or above, since it opens access to grades 6 to 9, which Foundation cannot award under any exam board.
The decision is rarely obvious, and getting it wrong in either direction has real costs: entering a borderline grade 4/5 student for Higher risks a very difficult paper that undermines confidence and can result in a lower grade than Foundation would have secured, while entering a grade 6-capable student for Foundation caps their maximum possible grade at 5 regardless of how well they perform. Number
The foundation strand covering place value, the four operations with integers, decimals and fractions, standard form, indices and surds (Higher), factors, multiples and primes, rounding and estimation, and percentage calculations (including compound interest and reverse percentages). Algebra
Often the make-or-break strand of the whole GCSE. Covers expanding and factorising expressions, solving linear and quadratic equations, simultaneous equations, inequalities, sequences (linear, quadratic and geometric), straight-line and quadratic graphs, function notation (Higher) and algebraic proof (Higher). Algebra is where the biggest jump in abstraction happens compared to KS3, and it’s the strand most GCSE Maths papers weight most heavily.
Ratio, Proportion and Rates of Change
Covers ratio simplification and sharing, direct and inverse proportion, scale factors and similarity, speed/density/pressure compound measures, and rates of change including gradients as rates and area under graphs (Higher). This strand rewards strong number sense and is frequently tested in real-world, worded contexts that catch students out if they haven’t practised translating a story into a calculation.
Geometry and Measures
Covers angle facts, properties of 2D and 3D shapes, area, perimeter and volume (including compound shapes, cylinders, cones and spheres), Pythagoras’ theorem and trigonometry (SOHCAHTOA and, at Higher, the sine and cosine rules), transformations, constructions and loci, circle theorems (Higher), and vectors (Higher). Many marks are lost here not through lack of knowledge but through diagram misreading, incorrect labelling, or missed steps in multi-part problems.
Probability and Statistics
Covers probability trees and Venn diagrams, combined and conditional events, averages from lists and grouped frequency tables, cumulative frequency and box plots (Higher), histograms with unequal class widths (Higher), and scatter graphs with correlation. This strand is often under-revised because it feels lower-stakes, yet it appears reliably across every paper and offers some of the most gettable marks when properly prepared for.

Common struggles with GCSE Maths
Across hundreds of hours of tutoring, certain difficulties come up again and again. Recognising which of these apply to your child is often the fastest way to understand why progress has stalled.

- Running out of time or panicking on harder papers. Especially on Higher tier, the final few questions on each paper are deliberately difficult. Without practice managing this, students can spend ten minutes stuck on one question and run out of time for questions they could have answered.
- Not showing method for partial credit. GCSE Maths awards method marks even when the final answer is wrong. Students who write only a final answer โ especially if it’s incorrect โ miss out on marks that were readily available.
- Topic-specific blind spots. Circle theorems, simultaneous equations, and compound measures are common weak spots we see repeatedly, often because they’re taught briefly at school and not revisited before mocks.
