Enquiry

Everything starts with a simple enquiry: through our contact form, a WhatsApp message, or a phone call. At this stage we just need the basics: which GCSE Maths exam board your child is following, the topics they need support with, and roughly what’s prompting the enquiry, whether that’s an upcoming exam, a recent report, or a general dip in confidence.

There’s no commitment at this stage and no cost. We treat the enquiry as the start of a conversation, not a sales process, and our aim is to understand your situation well enough to tell you honestly whether and how we can help.

Many parents get in touch after a specific trigger, such as a disappointing test result, a comment from a school report, or simply noticing their child’s confidence dipping around a particular topic. Others reach out well ahead of time, wanting to build strong foundations early in the GCSE Maths course. Both are equally valid reasons to start the conversation, and neither requires you to have already decided exactly what support you need.

Getting to Know Your Child

Once you get in touch, we build a real picture of your child’s current level. This usually covers their exam board (Edexcel GCSE Maths, AQA GCSE Maths or OCR), the specific topics or paper types they find difficult, their target grade or general goal, and any learning preferences worth knowing, for example, whether they respond better to visual explanations, worked examples, or being talked through reasoning step by step.

We also use this stage to understand practical logistics: preferred days and times, your location for in-person sessions, and how frequently you’d like sessions to run. None of this locks you into anything, it simply means that by the time we recommend a tutor, that recommendation is based on real information rather than guesswork.

By the end of this conversation, you should have a clear, honest view of what we’d recommend and why, including realistic expectations about how tutoring can help and over what kind of timeframe.

Tutor Matching

Using the information gathered when we first spoke, we shortlist a tutor whose subject specialism, exam board familiarity and experience level fit your child’s needs. A Year 10 student just starting the GCSE Maths course needs a very different approach from a Year 11 student chasing a grade 9, or an adult working through GCSE Maths resits, so matching is never a one-size-fits-all process.

Where possible, we also factor in personality and teaching style. Some students do best with a calm, methodical tutor who moves slowly and checks every step; others respond better to a faster-paced, more challenge-driven approach. We share the proposed tutor match with you before confirming a booking, so you can raise any concerns upfront.

First Session

The first session is partly diagnostic. Rather than launching straight into new content, most tutors spend part of the first session confirming what a student already knows well, where the specific gaps are, and how they currently approach problem-solving under pressure. This gives both the tutor and the family a realistic, shared starting point.

We also use the first session to agree working habits: how the student likes to take notes, how homework or follow-up practice will be set between sessions, and how the tutor will flag anything that needs extra attention. Parents typically receive a short summary after this first session outlining initial findings and the proposed focus areas going forward.

Ongoing Sessions & Progress Reviews

From here, sessions run on the agreed schedule, with weekly being the most common, though some families choose twice-weekly sessions during exam periods or fortnightly sessions for lighter, maintenance-level support. Each session builds on the last: reviewing previous work, addressing new gaps as they appear, and steadily working through the topics most relevant to the student’s exam board and timeline.

We believe parents should never be left guessing how things are going. Tutors provide regular, honest progress updates covering what’s improved, what still needs work, and any adjustments to the plan. This isn’t generic praise; it’s meant to be a genuinely useful signal for parents deciding how tuition is going.

If a student’s needs change, whether that’s a new topic causing difficulty, an upcoming mock exam, or a shift in target grade, the plan adjusts accordingly rather than sticking rigidly to an original outline.

Review & Renew

Periodically, we step back and review overall progress against the original goals set when you first got in touch. This is a natural point to discuss whether to continue at the same frequency, scale up ahead of exams, reduce sessions as confidence builds, or shift focus to a new topic or subject entirely.

There’s no pressure to commit long-term at any stage: sessions can be adjusted, paused, or stopped as your family’s circumstances change. Our goal is for tuition to remain useful and relevant, not to lock families into a fixed package regardless of whether it’s still the right fit.

For families approaching exam season, this is often when we discuss stepping up session frequency temporarily, adding focused past-paper practice, or bringing in extra sessions around specific weak topics identified through mock exam results. For younger students doing well, it might mean scaling back to a maintenance schedule that keeps momentum without over-tutoring.
