Across Years 7 to 9, a handful of difficult KS3 maths topics come up again and again as the ones students find hardest to grasp. This isn’t a sign of weak ability — these topics genuinely require a different kind of thinking from the arithmetic most students master in primary school. Here’s what makes each one tricky, and how to approach it more confidently.
Negative Numbers
Why it’s hard: Adding and subtracting negative numbers can usually be pictured on a number line, which gives students an intuitive model to fall back on. Multiplying and dividing negative numbers has no such obvious real-world picture — the rule that “a negative times a negative is a positive” can feel arbitrary rather than logical.
How to approach it: Rather than memorising the sign rules in isolation, practise them repeatedly in mixed calculations until they become automatic. Pattern-spotting exercises (for example, looking at 3 × 2, 3 × 1, 3 × 0, 3 × -1, 3 × -2 in sequence) can help the rule feel less arbitrary and more like a natural continuation of a pattern.
Algebraic Manipulation
Why it’s hard: Algebra asks students to reason about a general, unknown quantity rather than a specific number — a genuinely new type of abstract thinking. Expanding brackets, collecting like terms and solving equations all depend on this shift, and it typically takes months, not days, for it to feel natural.
How to approach it: Little and often beats occasional long sessions. Working through the same type of problem repeatedly — for example, ten different “expand and simplify” questions in a row — builds the pattern recognition that eventually makes algebra feel automatic rather than effortful.
Fractions of Amounts
Why it’s hard: Finding a fraction of an amount combines two skills at once — understanding what the fraction represents, and applying multiplication or division correctly. Students who are shaky on either skill individually often struggle when the two are combined, particularly with mixed numbers or fractions of non-whole-number amounts.
How to approach it: Rebuilding confidence with simple unit fractions first (finding a half, then a third, then a quarter of a round number) before moving to more complex fractions tends to work better than jumping straight into harder questions.
Angle Rules
Why it’s hard: Angle problems often require chaining together several rules in a single answer — for example, using alternate angles to find one angle, then angles on a straight line to find another. Students who know each individual rule can still struggle to see which rule applies at which stage of a multi-step problem.
How to approach it: Practising “spot the rule” exercises — where the goal is just to identify which angle fact applies, without necessarily calculating the answer — helps build the pattern recognition that multi-step problems demand.
Ratio and Proportion
Why it’s hard: Ratio problems are, underneath the surface, usually fraction and multiplication problems wearing a different disguise. Students who haven’t fully secured fraction fluency often find ratio unexpectedly difficult, even though the “new” content is really the fraction skill resurfacing in a different context.

Why These Topics Are So Commonly Difficult
What links all five topics above is that each requires more abstract reasoning than the concrete arithmetic most students are used to from primary school. According to the structure of the National Curriculum, KS3 is specifically designed to build this kind of abstract mathematical thinking — which is exactly why it takes sustained, deliberate practice rather than one good explanation to master.
