Every BrainVista tutor is chosen for two things: real depth in their subject, and the ability to explain it in a way that actually lands with a teenager. Here’s how we recruit, vet and match the people who’ll be teaching your child.
How we recruit and vet every tutor
A tutor joining BrainVista goes through the same structured process, regardless of subject or experience level.
Subject knowledge screening
Applicants must demonstrate strong, current knowledge of GCSE and KS3 Maths specifications, including common exam board differences.
Teaching demonstration
Candidates deliver a sample explanation of a real topic so we can assess clarity, pacing and how well they check for understanding — not just subject knowledge.
Structured interview
A conversation covering communication style, experience working with teenagers, and how a tutor handles a student who is stuck or losing confidence.
Safeguarding checks
In-person tutors are required to hold a valid Enhanced DBS check before being approved to work with BrainVista students in a family home, as part of our child safeguarding commitment.
Onboarding to BrainVista methods
Approved tutors are onboarded to our diagnose-teach-retest approach, our progress reporting format, and our expectations for parent communication.
Ongoing quality review
We collect parent and student feedback on an ongoing basis so tutoring quality is monitored continuously, not just at the point of hiring.
We treat this process as a minimum standard, not a formality. A tutor who is strong on subject knowledge but weak at explaining ideas clearly won’t pass our teaching demonstration stage, regardless of their qualifications. Equally, someone who interviews well but can’t demonstrate solid command of GCSE or KS3 content won’t move forward either. Both halves — knowing the subject and being able to teach it — have to be genuinely strong.
We also look for tutors who are comfortable working with teenagers specifically, rather than adult learners or younger children. Explaining quadratic equations to a Year 10 student who’s anxious about an upcoming mock exam requires patience, encouragement and the ability to read when a student is disengaging — skills we probe directly during the interview stage rather than assuming they come automatically with subject expertise.
Why the right match matters as much as the right qualification
A brilliant physicist who can’t explain momentum to a nervous Year 10 student isn’t the right tutor for that student. That’s why matching at BrainVista isn’t just “who’s next available” — we consider subject, exam board, current level, and where possible, learning style and personality fit.
When you complete a free assessment, we use that information to shortlist a tutor whose background lines up with your child’s specific subject and goals, then confirm availability with you before the first session is booked.
If, after a few sessions, the match doesn’t feel right — whether that’s teaching pace, communication style, or simple personality fit — we’d rather know early. Rematching a student with a different tutor is always an option, and we see it as part of getting tuition right, not as a failure of the process.

Every tutor goes through an application review, a subject knowledge assessment and a teaching demonstration. In-person tutors additionally hold a valid Enhanced DBS check before being approved to work with BrainVista students in a family home.
We match each student with a tutor based on subject, exam board and level, and aim to keep that same tutor in place for consistency, subject to tutor availability.
Fit matters as much as qualifications. If a match isn’t working, contact us and we will discuss rematching your child with a different tutor.
Tutors come from a range of backgrounds, from qualified teachers to subject specialists and postgraduates. Individual tutor qualifications are confirmed on their profile before a family is matched.
